Parody, Peril, and Dhruv Rathee: A Digital Drama Unfolds

Dhruv Rathee Arrested Over Parody Account Posts: Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee found himself in legal trouble after one of his parody accounts posted fake messages about Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s daughter, Anjali Birla. The account, @dhruvrahtee, falsely claimed that Anjali had cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam without actually appearing for it. However, the bio of the handle clearly stated that it was a parody account and not affiliated with the original Dhruv Rathee account.

Legal Charges: The Maharashtra Police booked Dhruv Rathee under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the following offenses:

  1. Defamation: The false messages harmed Anjali Birla’s reputation.
  2. Intentional Insult with Intent to Provoke Breach of Peace: The inflammatory content could have led to unrest.
  3. Statement Leading to Mischief: The misleading information caused confusion.
  4. IT Act Violation: The parody account operated online, falling under the purview of the IT Act.

Apology and Investigation: The same parody account later apologized and deleted the posts, acknowledging that it had copied someone else’s tweets without verifying the facts. The police are currently investigating the matter.

As of the latest developments, popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has been booked by the cyber wing of Maharashtra Police after one of his parody accounts allegedly posted fake messages about Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s daughter, Anjali Birla. The charges against Dhruv Rathee include defamationintentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and statement leading to mischief, as well as a violation of the IT Act. The police are currently investigating the matter. Meanwhile, the same parody account has apologized and deleted the posts, acknowledging that it had copied someone else’s tweets without verifying the facts.
